Paper Abstract:
Discusses its history & development in the 19th Century. Contends it is the world's most effective & efficient rail & subway system.

Paper Introduction:
London’s first railway was the London and the Greenwich. Most early lines (London and Birmingham 1837; Great Western 1838) were trunk lines, and suburban traffic developed tardily. When it did, it focused primarily on City Termini, the London, Brighton and South Coast to London Bridge; the North London, to Broad Street. G.M. Davies, the author of Geology of London and South East England makes the following point: “From the 1860s certain lines were compelled to run cheap workmen’s trains at very low fares; this brought about the development of workers’ suburbs in Tottenham and Walthamsow by 1900.” (Davies, p.66) After nationalization of the railways in 1948, King’s Cross, Liverpool Street, Marylebone and Fenchurch Street stations had headquarters offices for the Eastern Region;

Paper Abstract:
Scottish immigrant Andrew Carnegie took advantage of the synergistic relationship between the nascent steel & rail industries to build an empire, besting along the way fellow business giants Rockefeller & Morgan.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION The development of the railroads was a key element in the expansion of the United States and in the economic well-being of the nation during the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. The railroad was a transportation and communication marvel compared to anything that had existed previously. It crossed the territories of the nation and made it possible to travel from one end of the country to the other or to send mail and goods along the same routes. The development of the railroads was itself a matter of business expansion on a grand scale, starting with small lines and ending with vast networks of tracks which nurtured cities and towns all along their length. In terms of business history, the development of the railroads was not only the first big business venture in America but also

Paper Introduction:
RAILROADS’ CONTRIBUTION TO US ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THROUGH 1920 This research examines the contribution by railroads to economic development in the United States. The focus of this research is on the period beginning with the development of a transportation system in the United States (around 1801) to 1920. The industrial revolution, together with the economics of nineteenth century transportation, led to major social, political, and economic changes in the United States (Lowry, 1990). Generally, the economics of nineteenth century transportation meant that it was cheaper to move goods than it was to move people. Thus, people would tend to congregate in cities, which are located in places possessing some natural advantage—a port site, an energy supply, a vital natural

19th Cent. origins. Functions, effects, routes, roles of government & business.

Paper Introduction:
In the history of human inventions there is hardly one so well calculated as that of railroads to equalize the condition of men. It came from across the sea. The big, loud, lumbering iron chariot would change the face of America forever, help extend and tame the frontier, and usher in a new economic structure independent of the natural boundaries of mountain, sea, or rock gorge. The steam locomotive and the network of rails it would ride on became the focal point for business, politics and societal movement during the great frontier expansion of the mid-1800s. But its influence began almost a generation earlier in the 1820s when the first locomotive was brought to the United States. Early development of locomotion in the U.S. coincided with

Analyzes problems & challenges. Deregulation, marketing, labor & management, technology, service, types of carriers, efficiency.

Paper Introduction:
Once the only mode of transportation in the United States, besides horseback, the rail industry is now one of several modes of transportation available to passengers and freight shippers. Once a respected mode of transportation the rail industry fell from grace in the 1970s and early 1980s. Since then it has finally acknowledged that it needs to become more competitive, more technologically advanced and offer better customer service in order to compete and survive in the transportation jungle today. Many factors contributed to the turnaround that rail companies are making: the financial collapse of the Penn Central Transportation Company; the cessation of intercity passenger service and its replacement, a new company, Amtrak; new technological advances in diesel engines; a growing awareness

Paper Abstract:
Impact of railroads on development of cities & towns in Western U.S. in late 19th Cent.

Paper Introduction:
This paper will discuss the impact of the railroads on the development of cities and towns in the western United States. During the last four decades of the nineteenth century, rapid development in the railroad industry facilitated the settlement and growth of America's western territories. In addition, the coming of the railroads sped up the process of development in the major urban centers of the West, such as Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Phoenix, Albuquerque and Salt Lake City. In this regard, it has been noted that "the great railroads made large towns out of small ones, helped transform villages into cities, transported immigrant settlers, and moved products nationwide, into and from factories engaged in mass production, thereby creating the basis for a national economic market" (Weinstein & Gatell, 1981, p. 576).
