Paper Abstract:
His concept of a collective or common conscience. Use of punishment and strictures on behavior to create mechanical solidarity. The division of labor, and establishment of a basis for class war, as the cause of organic solidarity. Conflict and resistance. Marx's views. Conquest of society over nature.

Paper Introduction:
Emile Durkheim followed Auguste Comte in viewing society as a reality in its own right and in identifying patterns to the experiences of individuals which exist independently (Hess, Markson, & Stein, 1989). Durkheim theorized that segmentary societies are held together by mechanical solidarity in which repressive laws are created, tolerated, and essentially derived from necessity (Durkheim, 1964). The totality of beliefs and sentiments common to average citizens of the same society forms a determinant system which has its own life and can be, according to Durkheim (1964), a collective or common conscience. It is this common conscious, maintained by punishment and by strictures against proscribed behaviors in both the public and the private sectors, which creates mechanical solidarity. Mechanical solidarity is achieved via repressive law which integrates society

Paper Abstract:
The two types of social solidarity described by Durkheim are mechanical & organic. The organic bond is formed through natural differences in humans that leads to division of labor, & the mechanical bond forms because like humans are drawn each other.

Paper Introduction:
In discussing the bond of social solidarity, Durkheim indicates that there are two ideal types of solidarity, one mechanical and the other organic. The bond of solidarity is that which defines a society and its rules and regulations. The rules can be transgressed by the criminal precisely because solidarity exists and stands against, is directed at, and defines crime. Crime is defined by Durkheim as an "act contrary to strong, well-defined states of common consciousness" (Durkheim, 60). He then indicates that it is possible to see what kind of solidarity the penal law symbolizes, and he says that it is clear that social cohesion exists when there is a certain conformity of each individual consciousness to a common type, the psychological type of society. Individuals in society are attracted to one another because they resemble one another, but they are also linked to the s

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes socioeconomic forces behind CA anti-illegal immigrantion initiative & applies sociologists' theories to critique it.

Paper Introduction:
Marx and Durkheim's theoretical social perspectives are applicable to California's Proposition 187, one of the most widely debated, controversial bills in recent state history. Because both pro and con viewpoints on Proposition 187 have as their basis a malingering sense of social malaise, it will be beneficial to examine Marx and Durkheim's theories of social organization. Proposition 187, the sweeping ballot initiative that would make illegal immigrants in California ineligible for most state-funded services (non-emergency health care, education, and social services), is an incendiary measure that has divided society into two camps--those who believe that society should do its best to integrate those immigrants who are already here (although undocumented), and those who believe that some sort of
