Paper Introduction: “Dreaming men are haunted men,” wrote Stephen St. Vincent Benet, and the two greatest classical theoreticians of psychoanalysis and the importance of dreams would have agreed with the poet. But Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung would have differed – and indeed in their lifetimes often did differ – on what it is that haunts us in our dreams. This paper examines the differences in Freud’s and Jung’s theories on the interpretation of dreams. Because their theories on the importance and meaning of dreams cannot be extricated from the rest of their work, a brief overview is first given of the context of the importance of dreams to each researcher. After providing this needed background, the paper focuses on their work on dreams and concludes with an examination of the implications of these differences.

One night, he dreamed of a dancing satyr. Aristander, the dream interpreter traveling with the army, told Alexander his dream foretold the conquest of Tyre. Aristander figured out the dream by splitting the word "Satyros" into the two words "Sa Turos" -Greek for "Thine is Tyre." Alexander, fortified by the interpretation, attacked and conquered the city.

In that book, Freud claimed that dreams represent messages which are transmitted from the unconscious mind to the conscious mind. Specifically, Freud believed that the function of dreams is to take the repressed fears and wishes of the dreamer, which are stored in the unconscious, and then articulate them in a conscious form. Paper Introduction: This paper will discuss nightmares as an abnormal behavior, using the guidelines provided in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental Disorders, third edition, revised (DSM-III-R). According to the classifications in DSM-III-R, there are three categories of "parasomnias," or abnormal behaviors during sleep. These are sleepwalking, sleep terror, and dream anxiety disorder (recurring nightmares). In dream anxiety disorder, the patient has frequent nightmares which generally present "threats to survival, security, or self-esteem" (APA, 1987, p. 308). Paper Introduction: This paper will examine the physiological and psychological interpretations of sleep and dreaming. Prior to the 1940s, scientists considered sleep to be "a passive phenomenon during which major elements of the brain rested" (Long, 1987, p. 796). It has since been discovered that the brain is actually very active during certain periods of sleep. Physiologists have noted two distinct cycles which occur in sleep: the slow wave sleep (SWS) cycle and the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle. During sleep, these two cycles alternate from one to the other approximately once every ninety minutes. During the SWS phase, the sleeper's brain wave patterns slow down dramatically. During the REM phase the brain wave patterns become so active at times that they resemble those of a person who is fully awake (Palca, 1989, p. 352).

The purpose of this research is to examine the literature related to dream states as revelatory of unconscious activities. To this end, the paper provides a review of Freudian notions of dream analysis and interpretation; challenges to these notions are then examined.
