Paper Abstract:
Assesses changes in the characterization of Satan in John Milton's PARADISE LOST & PARADISE REGAINED.

Paper Introduction:
In terms of the characterization of Satan specifically, Paradise Regained offers a logical development from Paradise Lost. The character of Satan is different, but it is a difference that can be explained by the time that has passed and by changing circumstances as he must deal with the issues of battle over the souls of human beings rather than with the vast war in Heaven pictured in the earlier epic. Satan thus develops as a character through the two epics and between them, and an analysis of the Satan of the two works show how this has been effected, how it is portrayed, and what effects it has on the narrative. The Satan of Paradise Lost is a military leader, a commander of a legion of doomed angels rebelling after having been cast out of Heaven. Satan is a very real character in Paradise Lost, as he is in Paradise Regained, though he works out his inner turmoil in diffe

Paper Abstract:
Reviews the epic poem PARADISE LOST by John Milton. Focuses on the non-traditional hero & heroine roles played by Satan & Eve.

Paper Introduction:
The epic poem Paradise Lost was written by Milton to justify the ways of God to man. Yet the "hero" of the piece is considered to be Satan, the most powerful figure in the poem and the central intelligence for most of it. Adam and Eve are pawns in his challenge to the power of God, and the subject of the Fall is a central issue in the poem. Eve has long been considered the dupe whom Satan seduced into eating of the tree of knowledge in direct contravention of God's orders, and this original sin would doom their ancestors to death and to expiation for that sin for all time. Yet, it is possible still to see Eve as one of the major ethical protagonists in the poem even though she succumbs to this particular moral lapse, and an examination of her role can be one way to approach the poem and explicate its meaning. She is a different sort of heroine, in keeping with the fact that Satan

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes Milton's use of language in PARADISE LOST. Focuses on how Milton used the word "event" to mean "outcome," in contrast to its common use then or now.

Paper Introduction:
In Paradise Lost, Milton uses the word "event" with a meaning that is quite different from the way the word conveys meaning today and in a way that was even different from the general usage of the word in his own time. The meaning Milton ascribes to the word parallels the French meaning of the word and also harks back to the roots that make up the word. In addition, Milton includes in portmanteau-like way a reference to Eve which fits well with the underlying sense he is communicating through the word. For the most part, Milton is consistent in using "event" to mean "outcome," not in the sense of an activity or occurrence but in the sense of a consequence or result. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (1989), "event" derives from the Latin eventus, or occurrence, which is very

Paper Abstract:
Examines character of Eve & her changing motivations for separating from Adam, for eating the fruit & for sharing fruit with Adam.

Paper Introduction:
This study will examine the character of Eve in John Milton's Paradise Lost. Specifically, the study will analyze Eve's motives for separating from Adam (before the temptation); for eating the fruit; and for sharing the fruit with Adam. Also to be considered is how and why her motives changed from situation to situation. Eve is clearly portrayed by Milton as the cause of the fall from grace. In each scene, she seems to have made up her mind about what she is going to do---leave Adam to work separately in Eden, eat the fruit, and share the fruit with Adam---before she even starts considering. She shapes her reasoning to fit the decision she seems to have already made. Each decision is also clearly rebellious and/or selfish. Essentially, Eve does exactly what she wants to do, tempting danger at each point. Her motive

Paper Abstract:
Argues that poem's true hero is Satan rather than God, as evidenced in action, characterization, themes, relationships, overall message.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to examine Paradise Lost by John Milton. The plan of the research will be to explore the thesis that Milton's concept of Satan is superior to his concept of God, which is to say that Satan becomes the true hero of Paradise Lost, instead of God, God's son, or Adam and Eve. How the plan of the work makes this clear will proceed from a setting-forth of the general pattern of ideas in the work, and the means by which Milton makes these ideas emerge in the work. To develop the thesis that Satan is the true hero of Paradise Lost, it is useful to examine the principal line of action of the poem, which is in epic format and divided into twelve books. The first notable fact is that the action of the story moves almost exclusively for the reason that Satan, also called Lucifer, is the prime mover of action, either the

Paper Abstract:
Explication of poem on mortality, personal responsibility to God & to poetic talent, inspiration.

Paper Introduction:
This study will provide an explication of John Milton's poem "On His Blindness." The poem is concerned with the speaker's mortality and his sense that he is not fulfilling his responsibility to God and to his talent. The speaker fears that he is weighted down with these burdens to such a degree that he is almost paralyzed with indecision and the lack of inspiration, the sense that his very responsibility is preventing him from expressing his talent. He expresses irony when he refers to "that one talent which is death to hide," when that very thought of the burden of his talent--the necessity of its expression--is precisely what is giving him the feeling that he cannot write. He knows, in other words, that he must write in order to nurture his soul, that he has been put on the earth in order to write, to express that part

Paper Abstract:
Examines speech of Satan as serpent in Book IX of Milton's epic poem of man's fall.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to examine the speech of Satan as the serpent in Book IX of Paradise Lost. The plan of the research will be to set forth Satan's characterizations of the lower gods in Book IX, with particular reference to the promises he makes to Eve regarding her godlike status, and then to discuss echoes of the characterizations in a way that points to a unity of theme built around Milton's exploration of man's relation to forces greater than himself. Satan's successful temptation of Eve, which is the core episode of the fall of man, may be said to occur in large part because of Satan's ability to entice Eve to what seems a higher state of being than humanity. He does this by differentiating human and divine attributes and by suggesting that Eve and Adam can become as God by becoming themselves gods of a kind. When

Paper Abstract:
Compares [Paradise] with [Areopagitica]. Also discusses the doctrine of the fortunate fall; the impact of dreams & visions; & Milton's insights into the psychology of man.

Paper Introduction:
John Milton's epic poem, "Paradise Lost," is concerned with justifying "the ways of God to men," and his famous address on the necessity of a free press, "Areopagitica," also defends God's plan for the world and for mankind. In both works Milton argues that man must choose between right and wrong and that a benevolent Creator has given him the freedom to do so and thereby to prove himself His loyal follower. At first glance it seems incongruous that the author of "Areopagitica," which pleads for nearly unlimited freedom of expression as being in the best spiritual interest of a virtuous and well-informed people, is the author also of "Paradise Lost," in which human beings may appear to some readers to be rather simple minded, helpless pawns whose moral choices and subsequent damnation have been pre-arranged for them by higher powers. But a closer reading of both works
