Paper Abstract:
Characterizes his aesthetic as primitivistic. British mechanistic world and world of nature and sexuality. Close relationship between Lawrence's career as a writer and his own life. Central issue of sexuality in Lawrence's novels and stories. The love affairs of WOMEN IN LOVE. Elements of sexual passion. "The Odor of Chrysanthemums" as a story of decay, a reflection of industrial society.

Paper Introduction:
D.H. Lawrence was long a controversial literary figure largely because of his attention to sexual issues in his works. Kingsley Widmer identifies the aesthetic of Lawrence as primitivistic, which he differentiates from primitivism: The primitivistic is the aesthetic employment in the twentieth-century arts of primitive materials and forms in ways which are significantly antithetical to the values of primitivism. Instead, the widespread primitive materials and methods in the modern arts must be understood as a sophisticated artifice for presenting amoral explorations of experience (Widmer 342). Widmer defines primitivism as having certain elements: 1) a preference for the natural, seen in a positive light;

Paper Abstract:
Freudian themes in the D.H. Lawrence novel. The protagonist Paul as a psychosexually underdeveloped man. Classic Oedipal fixation of both Paul and D.H. Lawrence. Discusses plot, specific incidents and actions. The mother's preference for Paul. His inability to survive without his mother. His relationship to Miriam and his father.

Paper Introduction:
FREUDIAN THEMES IN D.H. LAWRENCE’S SONS AND LOVERS In his book, Sons and Lovers, Author D.H. Lawrence demonstrates a classic Oedipal fixation manifested both through the actions of the protagonist and the writing of the author. Both Paul’s devotion and later destruction of his mother evidence a psychosexually underdeveloped man. The story begins from the mother’s perspective, and quickly establishes her virtue as a mother by the love her children bear for her. At the same time we are shown a villainized image of the father, when we see him distressing his wife with his drinking and his temper. The first three chapters develop both the worsening relationship between Mr. And Mrs. Morel, and the degree of love that Mrs. Morel has for her children, especially the old

Paper Abstract:
Use of 3d person point of view & symbolism in "The Woman Who Rode Away" & "The Blind Man."

Paper Introduction:
D.H. Lawrence was long a controversial literary figure largely because of his attention to sexual issues in his works. One of his more neglected works is a short story entitled "The Woman Who Rode Away," a story in which the author contrasts a view of the primitive with the modern world and evokes a sense of deeper meaning through ancient sexual rituals. The story has power because of the mysterious nature of both the main character and her motivations and the ancient world to which she aspires, the world of an Indian tribe hidden behind the mountains. In this story, Lawrence deliberately leaves his characters somewhat sketchy and vague in order to emphasize their larger role as types, as representatives of different cultures and different times. In his "The Blind Man," the third-person omniscient point of view is used, with the narrator

Paper Introduction:
"The Rocking-Horse Winner" is the story of a young boy, Paul, who is driven to be lucky. Behind this drive is his need to please his mother, a cold and unloving woman who appears to others to be a good mother. The mother believes she has no luck; she started with all the advantages but has found herself in a marriage to an unsuccessful man whose good prospects never materialize. The mother tries to find work to bring in additional money but it is never enough. The parents try to keep up the appearance of their social position but their income is never enough for their expensive taste. The constant shortage of money causes the house to whisper in unspoken terms that there must be more money. Paul learns about luck from his mother: it is luck that causes people to have money. When Paul declares he is lucky he

Paper Abstract:
Autobiographical elements in main character's relationships & novel's themes.

Paper Introduction:
There are many autobiographical elements in the novel Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence. Locations, people, and events which were part of Lawrence's actual life are clearly evident in the fictional account of character Paul Morel's relationships with his mother and his lovers. These elements also reflect major themes which are found in Lawrence's other works as well. David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood, England, on September 11, 1885. Eastwood is a mining town which is located near Nottingham Forest in central England. Like Paul Morel in Sons and Lovers, Lawrence's father was a coal miner and a drunkard. D. H. Lawrence was educated for a profession in teaching; however, his poor health forced him to become a writer instead. Lawrence's first novel, The White Peacock, was published in 1911. It was followed by numerous others, including

Paper Abstract:
Critical analysis of D.H. Lawrence's short story. Mother-child relationship, themes, imagery, characterizations, interpretations.

Paper Introduction:
THE ROCKING-HORSE WINNER In D. H. Lawrence’s "The Rocking-Horse Winner," we have two different views of the world. Paul’s magical world allows him to rock on his horse and he is clairvoyant in being able to pick the winners at the race track. This is for him a gift and he does not attach any specific value to the money that has been won. He would do it without making the money, as this is just an ability that he has that can’t be explained. It is how he expresses himself as a child. His mother’s world is very different from Paul’s. She is materialistic and unloving. Her idea of luck is much more clearly defined in terms of money: "'Is luck money, mother?' he asked rather timidly. 'No, Paulo. Not quite. It's what causes you to have money'"
