Read this research paper. Paper Abstract: Examination of racism in Joseph Conrad's novel. Argues that the novel is about Imperialism and Conrad's belief in England's imperialist ventures and racist views. Discusses Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe's criticism of the novel as dehumanizing African people. Other critical views that separate Conrad's view from that of the protagonist, Marlow.
Paper Introduction: There certainly can be no doubt that racism, the prop and justification of nineteenth-century Western imperialism, saturates Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1902). It is difficult to see how it might have been otherwise. It is a novel about imperialism by an author who believed, in a particular way, in the imperialist ventures of England; ventures that are almost inconceivable without the underlying belief in, at least, the less-than civilized (if not less-than-human) state of the indigenous peoples of the places that were colonized. It is also a novel written by a man who lived at a time when such assumptions about race were prevalent throughout the society. It was the rare individual indeed who possessed, one hundred years ago, views on race similar to those of enlightened people today. The interesting question about the racism in The Heart of

Read this research paper. Paper Abstract: Analysis of the double framing device used by Conrad in his novel. Meaning of central story. Dualistic nature of Colonialism.
Paper Introduction: In The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the author uses a double framing device to enhance the meaning of the central story and specifically to develop his idea of colonialism by developing an image of its duality. Colonialism has a dual nature because it has one form in the country in which the colonial power operates and another at home, and there is a clear difference between the reality and the attitude taken by those who remain back home and who have a romantic idea of colonial life. Marlow is the bridge between the two worlds, and he also has a dual reaction to his own experience. On the one hand, he tries to tell the men on the boat some of the truth, but he lies to Kurtz's intended. He has journeyed to the heart of darkness not only in Africa but within himself, and while he has returned a wiser man, he still maintains some of the

Read this research paper. Paper Abstract: Compares the 2 Joseph Conrad novels re: theme of European corruption & destruction of Third World countries. Emphasis on character of Marlow.
Paper Introduction: The essential link between Joseph Conrad's novels Heart of Darkness and Nostromo is that they share the theme of Europeans entering a Third World nation in order to "save" the nation and its people in some way, but merely end up spreading their inevitably corrupting influences. Nostromo is far more complex (and much longer) work than Heart of Darkness, and uses a more intricate chronology, but the soul of the stories are the same in their portrayals of the spread of Western influences in Africa and Latin America. This is not to say that Conrad has an idealized understanding of the lives and societies in the Third World nations he fictionally examines. To the contrary, those societies are full of strife, violence, and their own brands of non-western corruption. However, what the white man brings is far worse, far more violent and corrupting, despite the fact that he

Read this research paper. Paper Abstract: Critical analysis of novel's protagonist Marlow, historical & cultural bases, portrait of colonialism.
Paper Introduction:
In the colonial era, the nations of Europe staked out territory in regions such as Africa, attempting to extend their reach over people different from themselves and to exploit resources found in those regions. Belgium was not the only colonial power in Africa, but it was one of the harshest. Joseph Conrad knew the colonial experience in the Congo and used this as the setting for his Heart of Darkness.
In his novel, Conrad tells the story of a man who ventured too far into the darker areas of his soul. He is presented as much affected by his locale, and there is a certain racist component in this analysis given the way Conrad contrasts the civilization of white Britain and the non-civilization of black Africa. The very image of darkness raises a question for some as

Read this research paper. Paper Abstract: Examines novel as depiction of failure & destructiveness of European (Belgian) colonialism in Africa.
Paper Introduction: The purpose of this research is to examine Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness in relation to Belgian colonialism in Africa. The plan of the research will be to set forth the historical and literary context in which Heart of Darkness was published, and then to discuss ways in which Conrad made use of the historical given of Belgian colonialism in the Congo to articulate narrative meanings.
Two features of Conrad's work dominate an appreciation of the literary and historical context in which it emerged. First is the issue of language; although Conrad wrote mainly in England and always in English, in fact he was Polish and remained aware of and concerned with issues of Polish nationalism. The second feature of note about Conrad's work is that it is almost always set in or near a major waterway. In their respective critical biogr

Paper Introduction: Joseph Conrad in Heart of Darkness tells the story of a man who ventured too far into the darker areas of his own soul. He is presented as much affected by his locale, and there is a certain racist component in this analysis given the way Conrad contrasts the civilization of white Britain and the non-civilization of black Africa. The very image of darkness raises a question for some as to how darkness and so blackness are identified with evil. Yet, Marlow, the man who goes to Africa to find Kurtz and bring him back, has a different conception of evil and knows that it lurks in every heart. His is not a racist view but a realist's view, and he worries as much about his own soul as he does about Kurtz. What may be right for one social group, given their circumstances and the way they are tied to the land and to the jungle, is very different from what is right for a

Paper Introduction: Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness presents a story-within-a-story, creating a central narrator, Marlow, who tells an audience of four a tale about Kurtz, an agent for a Colonial enterprise in the Belgian Congo. Marlow recounts the tale at the outset of a voyage; he has a seaman's "propensity to spin yarns," but the story is told not to amuse his shipmates--it is told to make them think about significant political, spiritual, and moral issues (Conrad 9). The unidentified first narrator wants to hear about Marlow's own adventure, but Marlow recounts instead the fate of Kurtz, and how Marlow's own journey into the Congo became a quest to understand the workings of Kurtz' mind (Conrad 11).
Marlow, deeply attracted to the notion of exploring Africa, signs up to pilot a steam boat up the Kissai River, taking the place of a murdered company agent. Marlow's narrative is a story

Paper Introduction: In 1881, a small British merchant ship, the Palestine, set out to carry a cargo of coal to Bangkok. Driven back repeatedly by storms, and then needing repairs for leaks, the ship did not make its final departure from British waters for a full year after she first set out. Moreover, the Palestine never did reach its destination. In the Indian Ocean its cargo of coal, too frequently handled and thus broken into combustable smaller chunks, caught fire. The crew had to abandon ship, finally reaching Borneo in the vessel's boats (Allen 153ff).
The second mate on this harrowing voyage was a young man named Joseph Conrad, and his recollection of the events formed the basis of his short story, "Youth." In one sense, then, "Youth" occupies a curious debatable ground between fiction and autobiography. Some features of the story which we might take to

Read this research paper. Paper Abstract: Role of Kurtz, importance to story, symbol of evil, compared to relative innocence of Marlow.
Paper Introduction: This study will examine the role of Kurtz in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, including consideration of whether his role is necessary.
Kurtz's role is absolutely vital to the story of Marlowe's trip away from "civilization" and into the "heart of darkness" up the Congo River. It can fairly be said that without Kurtz there would be no "heart of darkness." Conrad is not telling the story of the jungle, or of Africa, or even of nature in general, but rather is writing about the human being and his capacity for evil. Without Kurtz there would be no embodiment of such evil in human form, and the story would be robbed of all its power and significance.
As Marlow tells his tale, he has the advantage of having already experienced Kurtz and the evil he discovered in the heart

Paper Introduction: In 1890, while working for the Belgian Societe Anonyme pour le Commerce du Haut-Congo, Joseph Conrad traveled on a steamer boat up the Congo River in Africa, "in order to collect a company agent named Klein" (Young 388). Nine years later, Conrad's experiences on the Congo were published as the novel Heart of Darkness. In that novel, Conrad represented himself as the character Marlow, and Klein as Kurtz. Garnett has noted that Heart of Darkness is "an impression, taken from life, of the conquest by the European whites of a certain portion of Africa" (387). Marlow, the narrator of the novel, encounters a psychological horror in Africa which is symbolized as darkness and which remains with him even after he returns to London. However, the darkness that he encounters is not that of Africa or the Africans, but rather that of the European imperialists who

Read this research paper. Paper Abstract: An explication of author's metaphorical use of light & darkness in his novel. Light is viewed as symbolizing life, passion & hope. Darkness as symbolizing mystery, ignorance & despair.
Paper Introduction: The novel, Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad, makes great metaphorical use of light and darkness. Properly analyzing these metaphors requires being aware of what they have symbolized in the past. Light has often been used as a symbol of life, passion (fire), knowledge (seeing the light), hope and the future. Dark-ness has often been used to symbolize death, mystery, ignorance and despair. Thus, light has very positive associations, and darkness has very negative ones. Readers bring these associa-tions with them as they read Heart of Darkness.
Conrad's use of metaphor, especially in the first few pages, reveals his great love of the sea. He describes a ship,
sitting in the harbor with canvas gleaming with varnished spirit. The ship is surrounded by a haze that is emanating from the land near it: "The air was dark above Gravesend, and farther back
