Paper Abstract:
Discusses different approach taken by Jewish religion regarding what happens after death. Jewish emphasis on value of life on earth. Various ideas including Biblical picture of death. Ideas of contemporary Jewish thinkers. Rejection of importance of resurrection. Emphasis on justice and correct behavior in life. Nature of immortality.

Paper Introduction:
The Jewish conception of what happens after death cannot be reduced to a few simple rules and the religion's ambiguity about the question is remarkably different from the approach taken by most other religions. There is "no single biblical view of the afterlife" and the answers that were provided in the rabbinic phase of Judaism, and since that time, have also varied among different communities of believers (Sonsino & Syme 12). Two ideas emerge from the Biblical picture of death. First, it is the life-affirming nature of God that is emphasized. There is little interest in the problem of the afterlife and "the ultimate purpose is to 'sanctify' life here on earth" (Sonsino & Syme 12). Second, death does not consist of the disappearance of the individual entity and people move on, in some way, to another plane of existence. This is reflected in the biblical references

Paper Abstract:
Examines loss felt by a daughter upon the death of her mother. Perspective of mother/daughter bonding. Identifies key themes. Psychological impact of loss and attachment. Variables such as attachment to mother, mourning process, emotional support from father, suddenness of the mother's death, quality of the mother/daughter relationship. Process of grief and healing. Discusses studies on the subject, and results of a personal interview.

Paper Introduction:
Abstract The bulk of the literature on bereavement tends to focus on specific methods in which the bereaved work through the myriad effects of loss. This literature also highlights the fact that the closer the bond between the deceased and the bereaved (mother and daughter being the focus of this study), the more difficult, painful, and drawn-out the “grief work” process may be. More specifically, it appears that the age of the daughter at the time of the maternal loss is an important influence on subsequent coping and reintegration; younger females who lose their mothers are more likely than older females to experience long-lasting psychological and psychosocial ill-effects. Furthermore, the quality of the mother/daughter relationship itself is a significant determinant of how well (or poorly) a daughter will cope with her

Compares & contrasts 2 books: DYING WELL (I. Byock) & ON DEATH & DYING (E. Kubler-Ross).

Paper Introduction:
Issues on Death and Dying Introduction In comparing and contrasting these two books - Dying Well and On Death and Dying - what is immediately apparent is that these books are complementary, rather than contradictory. They both focus on the individual process of dying, while they both find that there are common or typical issues that face dying individuals and their family members. Both emphasize that growth can occur through the process, and that people can die well if they are willing to go through the process with open minds and hearts. There are many other similarities and certainly some differences in their focus, and the lessons the authors drew from their experiences. Similarities: The similaritie

Paper Abstract:
Contrasts Hindus of India & U.S. Protestants re: cremation rituals, practices, role of religion & differences.

Paper Introduction:
Cremation is simply the practice of burning human corpses – except for the fact that nothing about a culture’s last rites is ever really simple. Last rites are among the most important to any group in how it defines itself. Cultural identity consists of a series of actions and beliefs that one does and has – and that one’s neighbor does not do and does not have. Some of these actions and beliefs are relatively inconsequential and can be (and are) changed frequently and without much thought or significance given to such changes. Other customs, such as funerary rites, tend to change slowly and to reflect large overall changes in the society. How we say goodbye for the last time is one of the ways in which we learn to define who exactly it is that we are. This paper looks at the ritual of cremation in two different cultu

Paper Abstract:
Discusses the idea that a human body can be frozen & returned to life at a later date. Examines the practices of Alcor, a company which sells cryonic services.

Paper Introduction:
Cryonics has been presented by proponents as a potential scientific breakthrough whereby the dead can be preserved until such time as science and medicine have advanced to the point where a cure has been found for whatever caused the individual's death in the first place, while opponents see cryonics as a scam to dupe the gullible. Cryonics is a relatively new procedure, though the principle on which it is based has been discussed for some time in both science fiction and medical circles. Cryonics has the potential to become a real process that might prolong life, but currently we do not know enough to place much faith in it or to expend money on cryonic preservation. The company that is already making use of this technology is Alcor, which in 1987 was in Riverside, California. The business is based on a series of facts told to potential customers: 1) human

Paper Introduction:
Book Review On Death and Dying, by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Themes and Ideas The information in this book is very familiar. Much of what Elisabeth Kubler-Ross said in this book has become part of common knowledge, taught in the schools as the stages of grief and loss. She developed her model through work with patients and through discussions in an interdisciplinary seminar. Her observations and experiences led her to conclude that dying patients pass through five distinct stages during their dying process. Denial. In the first stage, the patient's immediate

Nursing perspective on providing pain relief & dignity to terminally ill.

Paper Introduction:
For many people, dying is the most frightening thing that they can imagine. This is true even for many people who are deeply religious and who believe that they will find beyond this life another and better one, which is something of a puzzle, because eternal joy and salvation should be recompense of a very high order for leaving behind the toils of the world along with its familiar pleasures. So why are people afraid to die? For some it is the fear that all humans feel in some measure for the unknown. For others, it is the knowledge that there is nothing beyond death but nothingness. But for many it is not the fear of death itself but the fear of dying, the fear of unrelieved pain and suffering. This paper looks at this last issue, at pain management for the terminally ill, as a subject that has been receiving increasing amoun

Paper Introduction:
DECISION-MAKING PROCESS FOR DEALING WITH DEATH AND DYING This research paper discusses the decision-making process involved with patients who are dying in hospitals, nursing homes and other extended care facilities, including the role of institutional review boards or ethics committees and mediation techniques. Although it has its pitfalls, mediation offers a promising alternative to other methods of decision-making in many such cases, especially those in which the patient is incompetent to decide for himself what, if any, further treatment he wants. The cultural and legal framework in which such decisions are often made in the United States militate against prompt and humane outcomes, but nonetheless clarify some of the legal and moral principles involved. Short- & long-term emotional, behavioral, cognitive & physical effects, focusing on depression.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction Parental death can have serious effects on children; indeed, in comparison with other forms of family dissolution and disruption, parental death has consistently been found to be the strongest stressor on children (Sandler, Reynolds, Kliewer & Ramirez, 1992). Many of these effects can linger well into adulthood. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on the effects of parental death on children. The review looks at both short-term and long-term effects; it concludes with treatment considerations. Short-Term Effects In the first-year period following the death of parent, children can experience diverse emotional and behavioral effects. One of these was examined by Sanchez, Fristad, Weller and Weller

Effects on surviving spouse (depression, suicide), special problems of aged, Alzheimer's, stages of dying, interviews with survivors.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION The objective of this research is to consider the manner in which the death of a spouse affects the surviving spouse, how people cope with the strain, and what sorts of services and professionals are available to help them through this difficult time. Various theorists have noted that there are stages of grief, and research has shown that these stages can be found not only in a situation where the spouse has died but also in situations where the spouse is facing death or otherwise triggers a grieving process and a sense of loss, as happens with older couples when one partner has Alzheimer's and is thus being effectively taken away without actually dying. Everyone will have to experience this sense of loss someday. For most people, if they are the surviving spouse, the death of a spouse will be a

Paper Abstract:
Examines 15 common stages of experience of near-death phenomenon.

Paper Introduction:
This study will examine the fifteen different kinds of experiences described by Raymond A. Moody, Jr. in Life After Life: The Investigation of A Phenomenon---Survival of Bodily Death. These experiences are features of the dying experience. Moody's book depends on the accounts of individuals who have "died" and returned from that experience. Therefore, it cannot be seen as a scientific work. Moody admits that a "proof" of these experiences are not "presently possible" (xvi). If the reader is to get anything out of the book, he or she must open his or her heart and mind to the possibility of the near-death experience. Moody wants to try to answer the question "What is it like to die?" (1). For such an answer, he goes to people who have had, or who claim to have had, an experience in which they have physically "died" and come back to life. They are the only ones

Paper Abstract:
Critical review of work on modern society's fear & denial of death, need for heroism, religion, psychology.

Paper Introduction:
Ernest Becker in his book The Denial of Death suggests that human beings are motivated largely by the fear of death and their own denial of death, both attitudes existing at the same time in every individual. The attempt to transcend death is not only an underlying rationale for the activity of every individual but has been the underlying rationale for all mankind and for the creation of cultural means by which to effect such transcendence. There are certain culturally accepted means by which human beings attempt to move beyond death, including heroism, religion, and even neurotic behavior. Becker's analysis suggests a way of dealing with human neurosis in a therapeutic setting, and his analysis also suggests certain truths about basic human nature and the condition of the human being in society. The idea that human beings fear death should be self-

Prevalence, causes, sudden infant death syndrome, case studies.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION The incident which brought the issue of parents who murder their children to the fore in the American consciousness most recently was the case of Susan Smith, a young mother who told one story to the world for weeks and then was forced to tell the truth. She claimed that her car had been stolen by a black man at an intersection, and that he had driven off with her two children in the back seat. She later was charged with having driven her car--and her two young sons--into a lake, leaving the world wondering how so many people could have been fooled, how they could have been so ready to accept the story that a black person had committed such a crime, and most important of all, how a mother could kill her children. The world may have been surprised, but police were less so. Medical and police

Treatment theories & strategies for the dying. Stages of dying, hospices, psychodynamics, logotherapy, play therapy, group therapy, art therapy.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction Barocas, Reichman and Schwebel (1983) have reported that: Today there is a new openness about death--and indeed a new interest . . . books appear with titles such as . . . Your Dying . . . Terminal patients and their families are interviewed on television. Celebrities give candid details about how their malignancies affect their lives. (p.436) This new openness to death and dying has served as a foundation to both increased research in the area as well as to the development of a number of treatment strategies for dealing with death and dying in terminally ill populations. This paper examines a sampling of the over 350 publications that comprise the current literature on therapeutic intervention for the terminally ill. The emphasis in the reviewed material is upon

Paper Abstract:
Statistics, causes, effects of near-drowning, prevention. Role of nurses & other rescuers.

Paper Introduction:
Drowning ranks second only to motor vehicle accidents as the most common cause of accidental deaths among children. Almost 5 children per 100,000 drown each year in the United States alone. Infants and toddlers are most at risk: as many as 45 percent of all cases involve children not yet one year old (Jumbelic and Chambliss 1952). This research focuses on reasons behind drownings, how they can be prevented and medical problems resulting from near drownings. For the purposes of this research, near drownings are classified as a life threatening incident in which children are found face down or under the surface of water. Cases in which children are found floating and breathing, or struggling, are not included. During 1989, swimming pools accounted for between 55 and 80 percent of all childhood drowning deaths in the United States.

Psychological, mythological, cultural & religious views. Ideas of Ernest Becker, Joseph Campbell, James Frazer, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross on denial, heroism, transference, humanism, anxiety, more.

Paper Introduction:
Since the beginning of time, man has pondered the problem of death and dying. The attitudes of various religious groups toward death appear to both reflect and determine attitudes of persons within the dominant culture. In primitive societies, where religion and culture were for all practical purposes the same thing, death was tied to life in a cyclical way. That is, death would lead to rebirth or resurrection in one form or another. In this connection, Frazer describes primitive rituals connected with the agricultural and seasonal cycles that in some measure sought to discover meaning in the cycles of human life as well. One such European folk festival, which is designed to ward off ill luck, involves what Frazer refers to as "Burying the Carnival." On the evening of Shrove Tuesday, the Esthonians make a
