Paper Abstract:
Discusses U.S. economic & military support of Chiang Kai-Shek. Factors that contributed to the victory of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over the Nationalist regime of Chiang in 1949. Growing tensions between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China. Korean War policy decisions. Historical background of Nationalist-Communist struggle.

Paper Introduction:
KOREA AND AMERICAN SUPPORT OF CHIANG KAI-SHEK: SETTING THE PATTERN OF POST-1949 CHINESE-AMERICAN CONFLICT This research paper traces and analyzes the factors which contributed to the victory in 1949 of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) over the Nationalist (Kuomintang) regime of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek (Chiang) and to the worsening tensions between the United States and the People's Republic of China (PRC) between 1949 and the end of the Korean War. Many indigenous and exogenous factors influenced the outcome of the Chinese civil war of 1946-1949. The most important of these were the chaotic conditions which prevailed within China and the Japanese invasion and occupation of the mainland. The CCP achieved in the early postwar period decisive military and political superiority over a weakened and corrupt Nationalist

Case study of China. Political and economic assessment of the country. One-party political system (Communist Party of China). The governmental bureaucracy, and its hierarchial structure; centralized national bureaucracy. Economic issues including international trading relations between China and the U.S. World Trade Organization (WTO) membership. Economic growth and high population growth.

Paper Introduction:
CASE STUDY: PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA Introduction The focus country of this case study is the People’s Republic of China, also referred to in this case study simply as China. The presentation of the case study findings include both a political assessment and an economic assessment. Political Party System in China The Communist Party of China (CPC) is the only legal political party of any consequence in the country. Some small independent political parties exist to lend credence to a claim of democracy for the country (Douglas, 2001). Effectively, China has a one-party political system. Therefore, there is no competition among political parties in the People’s Republic of China. The Comm

Paper Abstract:
Analysis of the Mongols conquest of China. Traits and strategies of Mongol rulers from Genghis Khan on including organization, military tactics, long-range planning, preservation of some of the structure of Chinese society, patience, persistence and brutality. Genghis as a military genius. Mongol impact on China. Rule of Kublai Khan.

Paper Introduction:
A number of factors made it possible for the Mongols to conquer China when such conquest had eluded earlier nomadic groups. Some of the same qualities which led to the Mongol conquest also led to the Mongol reign over China for nearly a century. Unlike earlier nomads, the Mongols were not only brutal, they were tenacious. Beginning with Genghis Khan and moving down through two generations of offspring and successors, the Mongols were incredibly patient and persistent. The image of "Mongol hordes" sweeping through towns and plundering and pillaging and moving onto the next town, drunken on horseback, could not be further from the truth, at least on the strategic level. While the Mongols did engage in brutality, as mentioned, the Mongol leaders, from Genghis Khan on, showed a proclivity for meticulous and long-range planning for the conquest. Once they had achieved

Political reform movements in Mexico. China's privitization efforts. "Most favored nation" status. State-owned and Western styled management systems. U.S. role in globalization.

Paper Introduction:
CHINA AND MEXICO: POLITICAL OUTLOOK FOR BOTH Perhaps, among all the so-called “trading partners” in the world that directly concern the U.S., both our neighbor, Mexico, and the vast land-mass called The People’s Republic of China pose both the greatest opportunities and also some danger. The opportunities are economic, of course. The danger lies in human rights and a difference in political attitude and the very nature of its people and their leaders. We need to get an overview of where relations and political futures of these two vastly different nations are headed. First, Mexico. From the time many ultra-conservatives wailed that the NAFTA pact would destroy American jobs, the fact that it has brought some economic growth and stability between Mexico and the U.S. has seemed to benefit Mexico’s border states more than it has U.S.

Paper Introduction:
HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN CHINA: REPRESSION OF THE FALUN GONG This research paper discusses the origins, nature and appeal of the Falun Gong movement in the People's Republic of China (PRC) and its repression by the Chinese government. Since it assumed power in October 1949, the Chinese communist regime has committed many human rights abuses which have been a source of internal unrest and foreign disapproval. Since 1992, the Falun Gong movement spread rapidly within China and among overseas Chinese. It has appealed to many ordinary Chinese from all walks of life. A mixture of traditional Chinese religious, philosophic, martial and healing arts influences, Falun Gong has partially filled a spiritual void arising out of China's economic modernization and the decline of Communist ideology. The movement has been forcibly repressed by the PRC government since July 1999

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS This research paper summarizes and analyzes the historical development of martial arts in China. The form and content of martial arts in China has been the product of the confluence and interaction of many religious, philosophical and practical influences dating back to ancient times. The most important influences have been the Chinese classical approach to warfare and military tactics, Daoist thought, Buddhism and various more modern syntheses of martial arts theories, including the teachings of the monks of the Shaolin Monastery during and after the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907) and the Taijiquan classics during the time of the Qing or Manchu Dynasty (1644-1911). Unequal incomes and barrier imposed by the hukou system. Discriminatory system and lower wages paid to rural migrants in China's urban areas.

Paper Introduction:
China’s Economic Reform Policy Historically, the lives of China’s citizens has differed sharply depending on whether they were born in a city or born in the countryside. For centuries, industry, including agriculture, was run by state-owned institutions in a government-planned economy. The effective result was a significantly higher standard of living for urban residents, who only totaled approximately 30 percent of the Chinese population. Today, despite economic reforms instituted beginning in the late 1970s, urban incomes in China still exceed rural incomes by almost 300 percent. Nonetheless, these economic reforms have improved the standard of living in China’s countryside, although more needs to be done to erase the significant differential in the standard of living that remains today. Deng Xiaoping’

Paper Abstract:
Historic role of military as a major force in China's politics and economy. China's evolving defense policy shift between national defense and defense of its borders. Restructuring in the relationship between China's military and its emerging market economy. Relationship of political and military branches. Multiple roles of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Paper Introduction:
Military and Civilian Authority in China Historically, China’s military has always been a major force in the country’s politics and economy (Starr, 2001, p. 90). However, as the country has developed over the last century, the military’s role, though no less significant, has evolved. In particular, China’s defense policy has shifted from national defense through the defense of its interior to national defense through a defense of its borders. This evolving defense policy combined with China’s economic reform policies of the late 20th century has necessarily caused an evolution in the relationship between China’s controlling political authority and its military branch, as well as a restructuring in the relationship between China’s military and its emerging market economy. Paper Introduction:
Economic Development and Rural Women in China China, along with India, are the two largest countries that are now undergoing economic "takeoff" from developing to newly-industrialized country (NIC) status. Since these two countries alone account for somewhat more than a third of the world's six billion people, their economic transformation arguably affects more human beings than any other event in history. In each of these countries, at least 100 million people have joined what may broadly be called the world middle class. Hundreds of millions of others are knocking on the door. In both of these countries, however, the modern urban sectors are still relatively dwarfed by their rural sectors, which in China alone numbers about a billion people. Not yet modernized, these people are nevertheless touched by and undergoing

Indonesia's economic, financial, political and social crises; widespread corruption. Anti-corruption efforts. Types of corruption that exist. Reform measures that would aid in reducing corruption on economic, legal and political levels.

Paper Introduction:
Both China and Indonesia are undergoing economic transformation. China’s economic reforms and rapid growth have spawned new opportunities and incentives for corruption. Indonesia is undergoing its worst economic crisis that has spawned natural, economic, financial and political crises. In both countries corruption is systemic. In Indonesia, corruption is so prevalent and widespread that it is known by the acronym KKN for “corruption, collusion and nepotism” (Marshall, 1998, 1). In China, corruption is also systemic but officials are reluctant to discuss it or disclose information. Nevertheless, the Economist (2002) notes that “every case that comes to light further exposes a system that breeds corruption at every level” (1). Paper Introduction:
This research examines fundamental differences between the thought of the Chinese and the thought of the Greeks. The research will discuss the structure of Chinese and Greek discourse as well as ways in which the respective worldviews of the cultures overlap, converge, and diverge. Much of what is different between Chinese and Greek thought begins with the medium of expression in each culture: language. Making use of what she terms "contrastive rhetoric," Matalene (789), identifies different systems of logic contained in Chinese and Greek (Western) language. Because of conventions established in ancient Greece, in the West, linguistic practice in Western languages such as English is governed by specific rules and conventions that determine correct expression or writing. Matalene cites the view that rhetorical standards "are expre

Roles of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in China's development. Background of China's historical development. Changing situation in the 1990s. Growth strategy.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction China is regarded by many Western business professionals to be the last great untapped market for goods and services. Largely insulated from capitalist practices and goods during most of the twentieth century, the country's large population nonetheless was greatly sought after by companies seeking to expand their global reach. After President Nixon's visit to China during the early 1970s, China and the West began building relationships that have resulted in Western companies being able to participate in Chinese markets, and in Chinese companies implementing capitalist approaches to some aspects of their business. This research considers changes in the economic and cultural situation in China over the past ten years, considers the outlook for the nation over the next ten years, and specifically examines the

History of English Language in Hong Kong Introduction In 1990, Hong Kong was selected as one of the 15 centers around the world to have its English language studied. As explained on its cultural website, The International Corpus of English (ICE) explains that its goal is similar to the other centers -- collecting material for comparative studies of English worldwide. This is because in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chinese and English are official co-languages. “Census figures indicate that English is spoken by a total of 38.1% of the approx. population, of whom some 3.1% regard English as their 'usual' language, while 34.9% claim to speak English as 'another' language” (ICE-HK, Online). Chinese Communisits freeing women from their traditional subjugation.

Paper Introduction:
It is difficult for Westerners to understand China. While there are always analogies to be drawn between different civilizations, Europe has few parallels to Chinese history. The unbroken continuity of culture, the unique socio-political structures, and the amazing revolutionary experiment of the 20th century set the Chinese into a category by themselves, especially from the Western perspective. While our Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian, scientific-industrial, imperialist-capitalist heritage has transformed the entire world, we have nothing resembling Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, or communism. Our nuclear families and weak kinship contrasts with their extended families and clans, while their collectivism and our individualism are polar opposites. Paper Abstract:
Approaches to international law & nationalism. Chinese Communist Party. Status of Taiwan. U.N. Admission. Issue of Tibetan sovereignty.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction Any comparison between Mao Zedong's and Chiang Kai-shek's differing approaches to International Law should start with a comparison between their different conceptions of nationalism. In turn, these different conceptions were born out of a distinct ideological, and, at times, different practical approach to the needs of modern Chinese society and, more specifically, to what steps were to be taken to solve them. These distinct ideologies determined Mao's and Chiang Kai-shek's vision of China as a sovereign state, but only in part. In many ways, Mao and Chiang Kai-shek were both children of the 1911 Revolution and both of them found inspiration in the thinking of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the chief ideologist of that revolution. Dr. Sun Yat-sen's first and foremost aim was the elevation of China to a po

Paper Abstract:
Attempts by China to join World Trade Organization. GATT. Globalization efforts. Changes made by government. Problems.

Paper Introduction:
The fall of Communism in most of the world has had little effect on the government of the People's Republic of China, a nation which has resisted any move toward democracy or any other significant change after the demonstrations in Tiananmen Square ended in the violent suppression of dissent. Yet China has to change in terms of its degree of modernization in order to compete in the world markets, and the nurturing of trade ties with the United States and others in the West is one aspect of trying to modernize the industrial and manufacturing sectors of China. The leadership may also hope to do this without raising any serious challenge to the political and social structures they have built, but it is not clear that this can be accomplished. Indeed, U.S. trade policy has been based on the belief that increased trade will have a salutary effect on the

Paper Abstract:
Discusses issues re: China joining World Trade Organization. Most favored nations status. Human rights abuses.

Paper Introduction:
The consensus is that membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) would be good for China and would benefit the Chinese economy. What is less certain is whether China's membership in the WTO would be good for the rest of the world or would in any way influence China toward democratic reforms as some hope. This issue has been argued for some time in the United States with referee to giving China most favored nations (MFN) status as a trading partner, and now the argument is moving outward to the rest of the world over the WTO. In the U.S., concerns have been raised specifically because of recent Chinese actions such as possible involvement in spying, threats against Taiwan, and even possible involvement in questionable political fundraising. The MFN debate is illuminating over how different groups

Paper Introduction:
TAIWAN This research paper summarizes the history, economic development, resources, political evolution, society and culture of Taiwan (the Republic of China or ROC) from the standpoint of a private foreign investor. Taiwan is an excellent country in which to conduct an international business. Only one grave uncertainty clouds the horizon for private foreign investors, the current impasse in cross-strait relations between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China (PRC), which constitutes a large imponderable hazard for the foreseeable future. History Taiwan is comprised of a large (13,895 square miles) mountainous and subtropical main island lying about 100 miles off the southeast coast of China and many smaller surrounding

Focus on international policy; Qualcom's CDMA patents, impact of 1992 revisions to law, intellectual property rights.

Paper Introduction:
China’s International Policy - Patents Until 1984, when the first Patent Law of the People’s Republic of China was passed, the government of China afforded no patent protection to foreigners (Moser and Ho 453). Along with legislation involving trademark, copyright, and intellectual property rights, China’s patent laws have signaled the Republic’s desire to open its doors to new technology transfer (Shan 1). Though, in its original form, China’s Patent Law fell short of international standards, amendments passed in 1992 have brought the law in line with the international community (Global Sources). Cultural hurdles faced by the government in enforcing the patent protection it affords have been aggressively pursued. The characteristically Chinese concept of technology as a

Paper Abstract:
Overview of Chinese Revolution of 1949. Examines role of Chinese Communist Party, its leadership and goals.

Paper Introduction:
The Chinese Revolution in 1949 altered the structure of Chinese society both in the immediate case and in the long term. The long term change included modernization of the economy and a shift. The effort to change Chinese society began before the Revolution, with the efforts of the Communists first to attract people to their cause and second to make that cause understandable as a force which would empower the people and lead them to revolution. After the Revolution, efforts at changing society were undertaken in a more methodical and all-inclusive manner. Many traditional institutions were either dismantled, prohibited, or downgraded in the effort to modernize and to bring about a new political and social attitude on the part of the people. These efforts had varying results and were of varying effectiveness. Some traditional institutions persisted in spite of Communist

Paper Abstract:
Discusses the Chinese Revolution primarily in terms of the actions and thoughts of Mao-Tse-Tung. Compares the ideas of Stuart R. Schram and Jerome Ch'en.

Paper Introduction:
The Chinese Revolution was a massive shift in social, political, cultural, and economic thinking and in the institutions of Chinese society. The Revolution was led by Mao Tse-Tung and his followers and took place in stages, putting certain Marxist and Leninist conceptions into practice in China and involving both a violent overthrow of the existing government and the long process of transforming Chinese society into a socialist enterprise. Different writers have examined these changes and the role of Mao in effecting them. Stuart Schram in Mao Tse-Tung (1966) examines the issue in terms of the man - his life, his education, his thinking, and how his view of the world was formed and would motivate his actions. Jerome Ch'n in Mao and the Chinese revolution (1965) also considers the Revolution in terms of Mao and the development of his thinking, but he gives much more

Paper Abstract:
Hong Kong's history examined through 1992, with speculation of its status after 1997. Presents major events & players both within Hong Kong & externally.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION In 1997, the status of Hong Kong will change. Hong Kong has been one of two Chinese areas - the other being Macao - under the control of foreign powers. The Chinese see these as "problems left over from history," and they were the result of imperialist aggression and incompetence on the part of Chinese rulers in the nineteenth century. Hong Kong has been under British control as the result of three treaties with the Chinese from the last century, but in the mid-1980s China concluded formal agreements with Britain for the return of Hong Kong in 1997. The Hong Kong area, fearful of being returned to Red Chinese dominion, has been given a high degree of autonomy in the agreement with Britain, and it will be considered a "special administrative region" of China.

Paper Abstract:
Consequences for Chinese society of the radicalization of Mao Zedong's political thought. Focus is given to late 1950s through early 1970s, & Sino-Soviet relations.

Paper Introduction:
In the late 1950s Mao Zedong's political thought underwent a radicalization process brought about by a number of forces affecting Chinese society. This radicalization process would also have profound consequences for the development of political thought and action in China over the next decade or more. The Chinese Revolution in 1949 altered the structure of Chinese society both in the immediate by shifting from the previous regime to a Communist system and in the long term in efforts to alter the degree to which Chinese traditions would be followed or changed. After the Revolution, efforts at changing society were undertaken in a more methodical and all-inclusive manner, and many traditional institutions were either dismantled, prohibited, or downgraded in the effort to modernize and to bring about a new political and social attitude on the part of the

Paper Abstract:
Examination of the funeral rites in Chinese culture points to some ways in which the social structure in China is maintained & transmitted in the rites themselves & in the accompanying observances of the community.

Paper Introduction:
Funeral rites provide a community with a ritual observance of the passing of individuals, a communal expression of religious and social beliefs, and a sense of the continuity of social structures through time. An examination of the funeral rites in Chinese culture will point to some of the ways in which the social structure is maintained and transmitted in the rites themselves and in the accompanying observances of the community. The family stands as the central motif in Chinese funerary rites, standing as a form of family worship and providing the individual in the present with a direct link to his or her past. The family, and family structure, is a central issue in the religion of China and in popular culture. As Thompson (1989) notes, ancestor worship, filial piety, both in the present and in terms of the past, hold an important position in Chinese society. In th

Paper Abstract:
Uses THE DOWNFALL OF PRINCE SHEN-SHENG as basis for analysis of themes in Chinese literature. Focus is on responsibilities of rulers.

Paper Introduction:
Many of the important ideas that would be transmitted and repeated throughout Chinese history began early in that history, as early as the Chou dynasty and before. Some of these conceptions are reflected in the literature of the era and would reappear in later literature. These ideas can be seen in early historical writings such as "The Downfall of Prince Shen-sheng," and a variety of cultural and social elements of the time can be discerned in this story. An important theme in Chinese literature is the responsibilities that devolve to the ruler, and this theme is clearly important in the story under discussion. It was a theme that developed early in Chinese history: For unexplainable reasons the Chinese, as early as the first millennium before Christ, during the Zhou (Chou)

Overview & analysis of China's government. Also discusses human rights issues, status as most favored nation, & economy.

Paper Introduction:
The People's Republic of China is a unitary state directly under the control of a Central Government, overseeing 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, and three municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin). The highest organ of state power is the National People's Congress (NPC). In 1993 the first session of the Eighth NPC was attended by 2,921 deputies, each elected for five-year terms by the people's congresses of the provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and the People's Liberation Army. The NPC elects a Standing Committee to serve as its permanent organ. The current constitution was adopted in December 1982 and amended in 1993, and this was the fourth constitution since 1949. The new constitution restored the office of head of state, or President of the Republic (Europa World Year Book, 1995, 805).
