Paper Abstract:
Discusses African civilization. Period of pre-history. European Imperialist policies and racial discrimination and exploitation during the Colonial era. Concept of white superiority. Cultural, social and agricultural achievements of Africa before the arrival of Europeans. Independence of Africa and problems of underdevelopment; outside forces. Achievements of various African countries.

Paper Introduction:
The problem of racism is not specifically an American problem. Racism occurs whenever there is a dominant racial group that uses its position to discriminate against a minority racial group on the basis of racial characteristics. Europe has also had its problems with racism. Imperialist policies of the various European governments were racially based and were justified with the idea that the non-white races were culturally inferior and never achieved the level of civilization of the white race. This idea made it seem that the white race was destined to be dominant and to oversee the development of these lesser peoples. In places like Africa, European imperialists claimed that natives were little more than savages before the coming of the white race and that they had never developed any lasting or important civilization of their own. However, as has

Paper Abstract:
The contemporary African situation. Political divisions in Africa. The various countries that emerged from the Colonial period. Problems they faced. Black Nationalist Movement. How the current situation developed. How Africa is viewed by the world, and how the continent views itself. Early history of Africa and degrees of development.

Paper Introduction:
Dr. F. Jeffress Ramsay's book Africa includes much information about the political divisions in Africa today, the different countries that have emerged from the colonial period, the problems they face together and individually, and some of the assets on which they can draw in the future. The books by Vincent B. Khapoya and John Iliffe offer more of African history to show how the current situation developed. A number of facts emerge from a reading of these three works regarding how Africa is viewed by the world, how Africa views itself, and the reality of the African situation. People of the West tend to know little about Africa and African history, including the history of the colonial era when the West had the greatest involvement in that part of the world. Modern Africa is said to begin around 1800, while the colonial

Paper Abstract:
Unique roles and challenges Nigerian women face. Description of Nigeria. Its British Colonial history. Its male-dominated society. Inequality of women. Greater discrimination of Nigerian women than most Third World nations. Women's gender roles in pre-Colonial society. Islamic influence. Female Circumcision. Prostitution. Some female protest.

Paper Introduction:
This paper examines the situation of women in Nigeria. This sub-Saharan African nation was amalgamated by the British in the early 20th century from a collection of separate kingdoms, freed in 1960, and has since had a generally repressive, politically contentious history. Nigeria’s women in some ways typify the roles and challenges faced by most Third World women, but their story is complex and unique. Stephen Wright (1998) reports, “Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and, economically, one of the continent’s strongest” (p. 1). With an estimated population of 110 million, the Federal Republic of Nigeria is the tenth most populous country in the world, and the fifth largest oil supplier to the U.S. market (Maier, 2000, p. xx). In terms of land mass, it is a medium-sized African nation, situated above the Equator along the southwestern bulge of the upper part of the continent, with a substantial coastline, a good share of tropical rainforests, and extending up toward the lower reaches of the Sahara Desert. The largest city, Lagos, sits on the Gulf of Guinea, close to the border of

Paper Introduction:
Tunisia and Tourism 1. Critical Issue According to the CIA world fact book, Tunisia is a nation of some 7 million inhabitants with a GDP of US $43.3 billion and the nation's primary industries are Petroleum, mining and tourism. Each year, according to the Tunisian embassy, some 4 million visitors comes to Tunisia, only a small percentage of those from America. The country has invested a great deal of money developing a tourist infrastructure ranging from building world-class hotels to creating programs of internal tours (McGuiness, 2001). After the economic slump in 1990-91 caused by the Gulf War, Tunisia successfully "relaunched" its tourism industry in 1992. Tourism is Tunisia's single most important sector for generating foreign exchange, and is

Paper Abstract:
Discusses internal issues and problems of the African country. Political, economic, religioius, legal and other conflicts. Electoral corruption, and loss of faith in the electoral process and government. Terrorism, ethnic and factional violence of the Algerian Civil War. Dictorial government & threat of nuclear weapons. Islamic fundamentalist threat. Berber/Arab conflicts.

Paper Introduction:
Algeria's internal issues reflect those of a number of troubled nations in the region that have a large and active anti-government population of fundamentalist Muslims who seek to establish the nation as a strictly Islamic state. The civil war of the past decade has abated, but the danger of serious instability remains. Algeria is run today by Abdelaziz Bouteflika, a powerful individual whose reign has focused on putting down internal dissension and protests, often brutally. He is backed by the military, and although he was elected, the entire electoral process is under the cloud of corruption. This corruption and suspicion is almost a decade old, since the military usurped the legal power of the fundamentalist party which won the elections in 1992. Electoral corruption and particularly the election of Bouteflika are representative of the

Paper Abstract:
Discusses aesthetic sophistication of Bamun peoples of Fumban (historical capital of Bamun Kingdom) in Cameroon. Social and culture complexity of the people. Linguistic diversity. History of the various ethnic groups. Religioius beliefs & influence of European Missions & Colonization. Artwork. Works of Bamun artisans (Carving, weaving, embroidery, metalworking, leatherworking, pottery).

Paper Introduction:
This paper takes as its point of departure a figure standing 63 inches tall crafted of wood, textile, glass beads, cowrie shells and brass in the late 19th century by the Bamum peoples of Fumban in the Grassfields region of Cameroon (85-8-1, gift of Evelyn A.J. Hall and John Friede, on display at the National Museum of African Art). The complex symbolism and beautiful artisanship of this piece provide a sense of the social and cultural complexity of this people and the aesthetic sophistication of the group. Cameroon is often described as a "racial crossroads" because of its more than 200 different ethnic groups, although this linguistic wealth can in fact be simplified to some extent because almost all of the languages can be divided into three main linguistic groups: the Bantu-speaking people of the south, the S

Paper Abstract:
Colonial government education policy. Covers period 1920 to 1939. Racial stratification of education. Colonial education system as a method to control Africans and keep them in a secondary position. Contrast of schools for European settlers with those for native Kenyans. Missionary schools. Educational opportunities for students determined by race. Actions of Kikuyu tribe to gain independent Kikuyu-operated schools.

Paper Introduction:
Kenya’s Education System, 1920-1939 Education in Kenya during its colonization was racially stratified, with varying curricula and facilities for Europeans, Asians and Africans. Sentiment in the colony was strongly in favor of such segregation. For example, Richard Frost stated in Race Against Time that Europeans in Kenya were “almost unanimously opposed to any infiltration of non-Europeans into European schools” (1978). Thus, up until Kenya gained its independence in 1963 and subsequently discarded the British system in the 1980s, educational opportunities for students in Kenya was determined almost entirely by race (KenyaWeb, 2002). Martin Carnoy (1974) and Donald Schilling (1984) have argued that the education system as applied to black Kenyans was really a means to control Africans and inculcate within them “a sense of inferior

Paper Abstract:
Justification by Africans and Europeans. Economic, historical, cultural and racial factors. European nations view of Africa as a source of exploitation and gain. Impact of European colonialism in Africa. Africans part in the slave trade. Slaves in British North America. The codification of slavery by the new U.S. nation.

Paper Introduction:
A number of economic, historical, cultural, religious and racial factors combined to allow both Africans and Europeans to rationalize slavery from its origins in the 17th century to the era of Thomas Jefferson in the United States. While Africans did take part as slave traders themselves, without the intervention of European colonialism, Africa would not have been stricken with slavery to the terrible degree which it was. Gailey, Jr. writes that European nations viewed Africa as a source to exploit for their own gain and in competition with other European nations (Gailey 122). The slave trade began in the 17th century, destroying not only the lives of slaves themselves (as well as their villages and families), but also involved Africans as active participants in the evil institution. This was a crucial point in involving Africans in

Discusses female and Colonial oppression. Issues of gender and race. Control of women by men in African society. Differences between African womanism and Western feminism. Impact of the Western feminist perception. Emergence of female identity and assertion of individuality. Based on a selection of texts by African female authors.

Paper Introduction:
The Cry of the African Woman: Beyond the objectification of the Male Gaze, Beyond Western Feminism Through this impressive selection of books, the reader is presented with a kaleidoscope of female figures depicted by female African writers. Unmediated by the bias of male authors, these writers illuminate the oppressive relationship between man and wife in many African households. Through their eyes, readers from the Western world can begin to understand the vast cultural differences that separate Western women from African women. Therefore, in their attempt to forge an united stance against female oppression, it is essential that Western feminists acknowledge these fundamental differences. The predominant difference is fact that African women have also suffered from colonial oppressio

Paper Introduction:
Ethnic Cleansing and Environmental Health Introduction In early April of 1994, groups of ethnic Hutu, armed mostly with machetes, began a campaign of terror that embroiled the Central African country of Rwanda. For about 100 days, the Hutu militias known as interhamwe engaged in a deliberate and premeditated attempt to exterminate the country’s ethnic Tutsi population (Children of Rwanda’s genocide, 1999). When the bloodshed ended, some 500,000 people had been slaughtered, the country’s industrial and social service infrastructure had been destroyed, much of the population had been dislocated, agricultural production had virtually ceased, and the real gross domestic product (GDP) of Rwanda was reduced by half (Children of Rwanda’s genocide, 1999). Analysis of human rights & religious violations & corruption in modern day Africa. Chad, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Africa, Namibia, Rwanda. Interclan politics, genocide. Response of international community.

Paper Introduction:
Human Rights Violations and Political Corruption in Africa: Twin Legacies of a Troubled Past and a Tense Present Introduction and Statement of Purpose Human rights violations and political corruption have gone hand-in-hand in Africa for many, many years. Both have become commonplace in Africa's pre- and post-independence history. Governments have resorted to mass arrests, detention without trial, and the ill-treatment (as well as the genocidal murder) of citizens (Kelso, 1994). Abuse and corruption, the latter characterized by the enrichment of self-designated elites who often pocket funds destined for development and humanitarian programs of vital importance, are seemingly endemic and self-perpetuating throughout much of modern-day Africa. If the 1950s marked a triumph for Africa, with independence

NON PROFITS IN AFRICA Introduction A non-profit organization (NPO) has as its charter, the goal of fostering some sort of human improvement -- either through research, social assistance, health awareness and so on. The NPO, because it is structured as an organization that spends money without generating income, must rely on the support of other organizations and governments and contributions from individuals to finance its operations. Usually there are tax benefits for the individual contributors. Africa is a breeding ground for Non-Profit Organizations. Female Genital Mutilation in Africa Introduction The issue of female genital mutilation has become a well-known one, popularized by Alice Walker in her book and the subject of television shows. It has entered the mainstream consciousness of Americans through those sources and through contact with the practice in hospitals and in newspaper articles. For example, in two separate instances during the late 1990s, women requested political asylum in the United States strictly on the basis of fear of genital mutilation (Waldman, 1999;Lazarus, 2000) One woman, Adelaide Abankwah, from Ghana, was granted asylum because of her stated fear that if she returned to her country she would be subjected to female

Paper Introduction:
LIBYAN INTERVENTION IN CHAD This research paper examines the geopolitical effects and implications of the intervention by Libya in Chad in the 1970s and 1980s and its occupation of the Aozou strip. Between 1965 and 1988, ethnic and religious strife and accompanying internecine internal struggles led to the collapse of the post-colonial order in Chad and created a power vacuum in this central trans-Sahara region. This eventually led to the involvement of Libya in the affairs of Chad in furtherance of the strategic and other foreign policy aims of the radical revolutionary but oil-rich regime in Libya led by the mercurial Colonel Moammar Qaddafi. Libyan support for dissident Chadian warlords and competing factions rapidly grew into more overt and massive intervention by Libya, including its seizure of the

History of country during regime of Mobutu Seki Sese; his objectives, revenue needs, corruption, damange to economic development.

Paper Introduction:
The nations of the West have long promoted democracy and democratic reforms throughout the world and have taken considerable pride in the downfall of the Soviet Union and the potential for more democratic regimes in the former Eastern bloc states. Yet, the West has also often been quite willing to ignore the way some regimes have behaved in the past so long as they were not communist, and one example of this realpolitik approach can be seen in the history of Zaire during the regime of Mobutu Seko Sese, about which a reporter for Reuters could write, "The word 'kleptocracy'meaning a bureaucracy in which corruption is endemicwas coined with Zaire in mind" ("Mobutu, Textbook Strongman"). The reporter further notes that in spite of human rights abuses and the use of his position to enrich himself at the expense of his people, "Mobutu became the darling

Paper Introduction:
Technological development is an important component of a developing economy. In the case of South Africa, the economy is changing as the social and political order is changing now that apartheid has been eliminated and a new regime set in place. South Africa has undertaken a number of projects for technological development in order to benefit the economy, and it has extended earlier efforts with new market analyses and the creation of new products. Before the change in regime, the government of South Africa admitted that in some areas, it was more technologically advanced than the world had known. Monitors had detected what is called a "double flash" in South Africa in 1979, and this refers to the successive explosions of light produced by the detonation of an atom bomb. Paper Abstract:
How the earily 19th Century South African leader has been historically perceived. Discusses 3 monographs of his life.

Paper Introduction:
This research explores ways in which Shaka Zulu (1787-1828), an early-19th-century South African leader of the Zulu people, has been perceived throughout history. In an examination of three monographs dealing with the life of Shaka, the research will set forth the context for evaluating both historical and historiographical treatments of his biography, and then discuss the bases on which a given treatment of the biography appear to be been structured. Introduction and Background The gradual, complex, event-filled, and sometimes violent dismantling of the European colonial apparatus over the course of the 20th century can sometimes conceal the fact that the history of Africa is not confined to the history of Europe in Africa. The European project of colonialism, in the context of trans

Paper Abstract:
Examination of the slave trading era from the African perspective. Discusses how slave trade was the principle export of of sub-Saharan Africa. Also discussed are possible consequences such as depopulation and a depressed economy.

Paper Introduction:
PATTERNS OF DISLOCATION The Slave Trade Within Africa The slave trade of the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries is known, in popular imagination, primarily for those parts of it in which Europeans or people of European descent participated directly. We can draw on vivid images of slave ships making the Middle Passage, or of slaves being sold on the block or working in the fields in the New World. But, though the kidnapping of Kunte Kinte figured in Roots, the African end of the slave trade is far less familiar. Yet the slave trade was the principal export trade of sub-Saharan Africa through much of the slave-trading era. By the same token, the trade goods which European slavers brought in

Takes position that famines in Africa of the 1950's &1960's are not a thing of the past. Currently, food production per capita is on a general decline. Mass starvation recurs due to political strife as well, i.e. Somalia. Discusses needed changes.

Paper Introduction:
SLIPPING BACKWARDS The Food Crisis in Africa Two or three decades ago, the prospect of mass famine loomed over much of the developing world. When concern about population growth first came to general attention, it was cast in the most starkly Malthusian terms: the prospect of populations outstripping food supplies seemed imminent. Since that time, however, much of the developing world has made progress in developing its food resources; or at the least has held its ground, so that population growth is seen in a broader and longer-term ecological context. The Indian subcontinent is an outstanding example of a region doing far better in terms of food availability than was expected a generation ago. Africa, however, i

History of Nubia as a country, & history of the populace is discussed. Past & present culture, & the manner of cultural evolution described. Also examined is disappearance, through assimilation, of Nubian culture because of Aswan Dam

Paper Introduction:
Nubia is the name of a former African country now divided between Egypt and Sudan, and the name remains for the Nubian Desert South of Lake Nasser. Ancient Egypt was briefly ruled by Nubian kings in the 8th7th centuries BC. The ancient Egyptians knew the north as Wawat and the south as Kush, with the dividing line roughly at Dongola. Egyptian building work in the area included temples at Abu Simbel, Philae, and a defensive chain of forts that established the lines of development of medieval fortification. Between about 600 BCAD 350, the capital of Nubia was Meroe, near Khartoum. About AD 250550 most of Nubia was occupied by the Xgroup people, of whom little is known; their royal mound tombs were mistaken by earlier investigations for natural mounds created by wind erosion and were excavated in the 1930s.

Paper Abstract:
Describes the post-colonial economic growth of Tanzania, which took a "socialist" path to development. Assesses the positives & negatives of that choice.

Paper Introduction:
Tanzania is an African nation that took a "socialist" path to development. Tanzania is ruled by one political party, the CCM, and it exercises supreme authority over all state organs. Its constitution became effective in 1977, and the principal doctrines are that all human beings are equal, that every individual has a right to dignity and respect, and that only with socialism and self-reliance can a society of free and equal citizens be constructed. The party has a broad membership, and any citizen eighteen years or older can become a member by accepting the aims, beliefs, and objectives of the CCM (Kaplan, 1978, 104-105). Prior to the Arusha Declaration, development policies for Tanzania had encouraged extensive private investment and large financial contributions from abroad, and these orientations were

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION The slave trade would carry Africans far from their homeland, but the problem of slavery begins in Africa as warring tribes would capture members of other tribes and sell them into slavery. The slave trade in West Africa served the labor requirements of the New World and other areas for more than three centuries. The slave trade in West Africa began with the Portuguese in the fifteenth century and increased until it was a major trade linking Africa with Europe and North and South America. Slave ships headed for the New World would stop at sites along the West African coast to pick up their human cargo, often purchasing members of one tribe from another. The Spanish and English would also become involved in the slave trade over the next two centuries, and slavery in the New World in

Paper Abstract:
Military & political career of leader of African nation off & on since 1979.

Paper Introduction:
Jerry Rawlings is a Ghanaian military and political leader who led the coup that ousted the military junta in 1979. At the time, he stepped aside to allow a civilian president, Hilla Limann, to govern, but in December 1981, Rawlings deposed Limann and suspended the constitution, banned all political parties, and later introduced economic reforms in 1983 that helped revive the economy. He won a free presidential election in 1992 and again in 1996. Ghana had been under military rule for some time, subject to military coups such as that in 1972 under the leadership of Colonel Achaempong. The people resisted from time to time when food shortages became acute, and the government would retaliate with considerable brutality. In May 1979, Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings demanded a confrontation between officers and men

Examines two movements for political & social action among different African populations, how they view themselves & their relationship to Africa & the struggle for power & rights.

Paper Introduction:
Different circumstances produce different forms of political action, and the plight of black people in different parts of the world has produced different movements for rights and autonomy given the differing political conditions in which the people find themselves and the different specific goals they themselves develop. Pan-Africanism and Negritude are terms applied to certain movements having ideas in common about the way different African populations should view themselves and their relationship to the world. Both approaches have been active and influential in the Caribbean region and in South America where a large black population resides. The two approaches have certain things in common even as they have their differences, and an examination of some of the writings on the subject as well as a specific study of how the movements have devel

Origins in Eritrea province's fight for independence in 1961, causes, leaders, violence, global aspects, Haile Selassie, aftermath.

Paper Introduction:
The civil war in Ethiopia involves a fight for independence by the province of Eritrea, and this war began in 1961. At that time, the central government in Addis Ababa, then the government of Haile Selassie, broke a United Nationssponsored autonomy plan for the region. Eritrea is the triangular northernmost province of Ethiopia. It is dominated by a range of mountains that flattens out to form the Barka Plains in the west, with an arm of the Danakil depressionone of the hottest regions on earthextending in a southeasterly direction, along the Red Sea. The Greek name for the Red Sea was Erythra Thalassa, and it is from this that Eritrea derives its name. It consists of 46,000 square miles of land, or an area about the size of Pennsylvania or Mississippi. It is believed that this region holds the key to Ethiopia's political stability and territorial

Examines post-colonial govt. in African nation, modernization, unification, liberalization, denationalization.

Paper Introduction:
Basil Davidson has argued that the concept of the nation-sate was a poor choice for governing structure in Africa and was indeed doomed from the beginning. Davidson writes about the problems of post-colonial Africa that "the jubilant crowds celebrating independence were not inspired by a 'national consciousness' any more than were the Romanian peasants and their coevals in the nationstates crystallized some decades earlier from Europe's old internal empires. They were inspired by the hope of more and better food and shelter" (Davidson 185). When the satisfaction of these immediate needs did not materialize, the people oriented themselves other foci for social allegiance. Eriksen writes, For the great PanAfricanists, the nationstate may have been too small; for very many Africans, it was way

Paper Abstract:
History of North African nation from 5th Cent. & second-class status of women under Islamic govt. Politics, marriage, sex, reform, effects of globalism.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction The country now called Tunisia has a long and storied past. It has gone from a place of prominence in the classical world, through years as a subject of colonial European interest in the region, to its current status as an independent country. In every stage of development, women have had a role in the country's destiny. This must be true of any country, for as women constitute half the human population they must necessarily make significant contributions to all societies. However, it is also true that the contribution of women to Tunisian society has rarely been in the forefront of affairs. The face that Tunisia, like other countries in the region, puts forward is usually a male one. This is a result, at least in some measure, of traditional Islamic ideas about the proper roles for women in this primarily Moslem coun
